Tributes paid to former Maldon mayor after his death is announced
Tribute has been paid to a former Maldon Mayor after his death was announced.
David Ogg served on Maldon Town Council since being co-opted in 2015 to serve the Maldon east ward and was the town's mayor in the past civic year (2021-22).
His friend and council colleague, current mayor Cllr Andrew Lay spoke of his 'deep personal sadness' and has paid this tribute: "David was a strong and vibrant member and was passionate about his role within the Town Council.
"I was honoured to be chosen as his Deputy Mayor last year and be by his side as he enjoyed the role of Town Mayor.
"David was first co opted in June 2015 and served as chairman of the planning committee between 2017 and 2021.
"He was elected to serve as Town Mayor by his colleagues in 2021-2022. During his Mayoral year, which was difficult due to the effects of the pandemic, David presented VE70 commemorative coins to local school children; took part in the 850th Royal Charter service and wrote the foreword for the commemorative Charter Book; planted trees for the Queen's Green Canopy Jubilee in Maldon; oversaw a project to install a herb garden at St Giles Ruins which is now coming to fruition and attended the British Kebab Awards Ceremony in London where Sark Restaurant was recognised as the best Regional Kebab restaurant.
"Originally from Canvey Island, David was an active tradesman in the town, known to many friends, residents and businesses across Maldon and the surrounding district.
"David was a generous friend and had a passion for the Town.
"The last Civic event David attended was the Merchant Navy Day Service on the Quay on 4 September.
"I, together with my council colleagues and staff will miss him greatly."
During his mayoral year Cllr Ogg raised more than £4,000 for local good causes.
