Maldon Town Council is calling for a responsible local individual with a keen interest in town history to fill an exclusive job vacancy.

Now is your chance to become the latest in a long line of Sergeants-at-Mace, a role which will see you as a respected part of the Mayor's entourage. .

As the official guardian of the Mace, you will carry the Mace before the Mayor of Maldon in civic ceremonial processions and at meetings of the Full Council.

You will assist the Town Mayor with the robes and chains of office, support the Mayor's Secretary at Council functions, and provide advice to the Mayor on civic protocol and tradition.

Several policemen and police sergeants have taken the job in recent years, a tradition which appears to be continuing with the council describing the role as "particularly suited to a retired soldier, police officer, or other official with law enforcement and security experience."

You will be required to work around 50 hours per year, with shifts mostly evenings and weekends with occasional weekdays.

You can find the application form on the council website here. Closing date Friday May 9, 2025.
