What to watch at Maldon Film Club in November as the 19th season continues
Maldon Film Club's new season continued in October with the screening of Broker and the Oscar-winning Tar.
The first film for next month, Brian and Charles, will be screened on Tuesday 7 November. It features a lonely inventor, Brian, who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. After a particularly harsh winter, Brian goes into a deep depression. Completely isolated and with no one to talk to, Brian does what any sane person would do when faced with such a melancholic situation. He builds a robot. Three days, a washing machine and various spare parts later, he invented Charles, a robot who learns English from a dictionary and has an obsession with cabbages. It is a humorous and heart warming story about friendship, family, finding love and letting go.
Lunana – A Yak in the Classroom is the second film for November. It tells the story of Ugyen, a young teacher in modern Bhutan. As a reprimand for shirking his duties, his superiors send him to the most remote school in the world, a glacial Himalayan village called Lunana, to complete his service. He finds himself exiled from his Westernised comforts after an arduous eight-day trek to get there. There, he finds no electricity, no textbooks - not even a blackboard. Though poor, the villagers extend a warm welcome to their new teacher, but he faces the daunting task of teaching the village children without any supplies. He wants to quit and go home, but he begins to learn of the hardship in the lives of the beautiful children he teaches, and begins to be transformed through the amazing spiritual strength of the villagers.
On December 5, the film to be screened is A Man Called Otto. It stars Tom Hanks as a grump who, since the loss of his wife, wants it all to end. However, Otto's life is turned around when a young family move in next door. It is one of five films which provides Maldon Film Club members with a 12.5 per cent discount off the accompanying book at Maldon Books.
The programme for the 2023/24 season continues until 22 May 2024, with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2023 and Wednesdays in 2024.
An annual subscription costs £30, entitling members to free admission to the season's films and there are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16-18 in full time education and training. In addition, members' guests may attend a film evening for £4 per person per film.
