Maldon Film Club is ending March on a high, after winning the Art and Culture Award at Maldon's Annual Community Awards this week.

Earlier this month, members enjoyed screenings of 'Promising Young Woman', 'Parallel Mothers' and Kenneth Branagh's Oscar-winning 'Belfast'.

The Club meets at Maldon Town Hall, where doors open at 7.30pm before films begin at 8pm. The current season continues until May 24. Until then, films will be shown fortnightly on Wednesdays.

Next month's two films are the Oscar-nominated 'The Worst Person in the World' and the classic 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'.

'The Worst Person in the World', to be screened on Wednesday 12 April, chronicles four years in the life of Julie who is facing a tidy and predictable life without any surprises. She embarks on a challenging journey of love and enlightenment, hoping to give her life purpose. Gradually, Julie puts her dormant talents to good use, gaining new skills and experiences, creating choices for herself that help to define who she is and show her character to the world.

On Wednesday 26 April, the 1967 Oscar-winning film 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' will be shown, starring Sidney Poitier, Katherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy. Joanna "Joey" Drayton her fiancé, the highly qualified Dr John Prentice, home to meet her parents. Dr Prentice is a black widower who needs to fly to Geneva that evening to work with the World Health Organisation. Joey invites John's parents to have dinner with her family and the couple flies from Los Angeles to San Francisco without knowing that Joey is white. Throughout the encounter, the families discuss the "problems" of their son and daughter.

Details of the remaining films to be screened this season, both of which are Oscar winners, are listed below:

  1. May 10: The Father
  2. May 24: Drive My Car

On Tuesday (March 21), Maldon Film Club won the Art and Culture Award at the town's Annual Community Awards, "for providing much needed culture to our town, offering a multitude of films and entertainment throughout the year".

The Club's 2023/24 season will commence on Tuesday 12 September. Details of upcoming films will follow shortly.
