The Joint-Head of Maldon's Plume Academy has expressed her "delight" following a visit from the country's most senior judge on Monday (March 20).

The Right Honourable Lord Ian Burnett of Maldon, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, spoke at the Academy, before touring two of Maldon's most significant historic buildings.

Mrs Ruth Clark, Joint Head of the Academy, told Nub News: "We were honoured and delighted to receive some of the most eminent legal minds in the country.

"Our students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the Lord Chief Justice's presentation about the rule of law and engage in an insightful question and answer session.

"We hope the work of Diversity and Community Relations Judges will help encourage our students to consider a career in the justice system.

"It is important that all students regardless of background are supported through the curriculum and relevant Career Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) discussions to consider relevant pathways to be lawyers and judges of the future if this is an avenue they wish to pursue."

Accompanied by senior colleagues including Crown Court judges and magistrates, Lord Burnett gave the pupils a chance to hear about the work of judges, the justice system, and the rule of law.

Lord Burnett later headed to the Moot Hall, where historian Stephen Nunn provided insight into the building's history and local significance, before visiting Plume Library.

Mr Nunn told Nub News his thoughts on the Lord Chief Justice's visit.

He said: "It was a pleasure to talk to Lord Burnett about the history of the Moot Hall and set the scene for his visit to The Plume Library.

"He clearly has a real passion for the heritage of our town."

Schools wishing to ask for a judge to speak to students can do so by going to visiting the website or by getting in touch via email.
