Maldon District: Stow Maries to host Bank Holiday Wings 'n' Wags Dog Show
Dog lovers are in for a treat at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, with a brand new event over the upcoming Bank Holiday Weekend.
The 'Wings 'n' Wags' dog show will be take place on Sunday 27 August, from 10am until 4pm. Entry will cost £5.
Ian Flint, CEO of the charity which runs Stow Maries, said: "The idea for this event came from one of our own dog-owning volunteers, who easily won us over to hosting a fun filled day at the aerodrome with dogs competing in up to seven different categories"
"These include The Best Sopwith Pup for those under one year and an Oldie award for those over 10 years old. In addition to the Best In Show award, there will also be a 'Stow's Scruffiest Hound' prize."
The eight class categories are:
- Best Sopwith Pup (under one year)
- Best Oldie (over 10 years)
- Best New Recruit and Young Handler on Parade (under 12 years)
- Best Lady Model 'T' and Crewman Canine
- Best Wartime Rescue
- Winco's Waggiest Tail
- Stow's Scruffiest Hound
- Best in Show
Winners will receive medals, ribbons and prizes supplied by local furry-friendly firms. There is no need to book. Entrants can turn up for registration at 11am and pay the £2 fee. Judging in first contest will take place shortly afterwards.
Dogs are also welcome, even if they are too shy to compete but still want to be part of the "wings and Wags" experience. There will be a variety of interesting stalls to explore, refreshments available in the Airmen's Mess cafe. The museum exhibits, displays and shop will be open to everyone.
Essex breeder Sara Thompson, from SunnyPride Ridgebacks, will judge the dog show.
Wings 'n' Wags is a fundraiser supporting the work to preserve and protect Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Tickets can be bought at the gate or via the Stow Maries website.
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome held a successful living history event last weekend, despite "fierce" weather conditions.
