Woodfield Cottages, a conservation area in Heybridge, has been assessed to be in poor condition by England's public body for the historic environment.

An assessment by Historic England found the area to be in poor condition, stating that the area is 'deteriorating'.

The domestic settlement appeared in the 'Heritage at Risk' register, announced on November 9.

Historic England's website states: "Our register identifies sites most at risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

"Our regional teams work with communities, owners, developers, and funders to focus on the country's most vulnerable historic places and find solutions to rescue them."

The Woodfield cottages became local listed buildings in January 2022.

The cottages, developed by the industrialist EH Bentall in 1873, have architectural interest as an "early, rare and relatively intact survival of mass-concrete housing, a pioneering material of the present age".

Multiple other locations across the Maldon District have also made the list, including Woodham Walter Hall, Wickham Bishops timber trestle railway viaduct and the Parish Church of St Andrew, Fambridge Road.

Maldon's Plume Library was added to the register in 2020, and subsequently received nearly £68,000 from Historic England for urgent repairs.
