BOTH fire engines from Maldon were this morning (Sunday, 2 November) called to a fire affecting an outdoor structure on the far bank of the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation at Heybridge Basin.

Owing to the remote location, firefighters made use of a light-portable pump which drew water from the nearby canal to fight the fire.

A statement from the fires service said: "We would like to extend a massive thanks to Essex Waterways Ltd. and the Lock Keeper at Heybridge Basin for ably assisting crews helping to transport tools and equipment from Daisy Meadows car park up the canal to the incident location to enable firefighters to protect surrounding risk and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby moored boats."
