Maldon Council to stop providing food waste caddy liners in effort to balance books
Maldon District Council have recently announced the decision to stop providing food waste caddy liners, as part of ongoing efforts to manage costs.
Food caddy liners, or food waste sacks, will no longer be provided by the District Council, with residents encouraged to use their own recycled materials or purchase caddy liners themselves.
The council say the decision is down to ongoing reviews on how to provide the best value service, as well as complexities in sourcing caddy liners in bulk.
They also say the move would help lower the Council's carbon emissions, as not purchasing them would help meet the District's carbon targets.
Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: "This wasn't any easy decision made by the Council and it was made to help us produce a balanced budget and to manage our costs, so that other services can be maintained. It will also help us manage some of our carbon emissions.
"Like all our decisions, it is something we will monitor and review."
Residents are advised that low-cost alternatives to actual liners are available. These include any thin plastic bag, such as a carrier bag or plastic bread bag, any biodegradable bag, newspaper, or food can be placed loose in the food waste bin.
The move follows the approach of some other local councils, such as Braintree.
