Police and army specialists were called to Bradwell-on-Sea on Tuesday (January 24) amid reports of an "unexploded ordnance" uncovered by the coast, which is to be safely detonated today (January 26).

The explosive is a Second World War-era air-dropped bomb.

In an email sent to residents, Maldon District Council confirmed arrangements are being made by Essex Police to clear the area this morning.

"The police are advising people to stay away from the area to prevent congestion."

It said: "The Council will open a reception point at Bradwell Village Hall in the morning to offer shelter to those displaced. The police are responsible for all door-knocking and clearance of the area.

"The Police are advising people to stay away from the area to prevent congestion. Some local roads will be shut."

The explosive is set to be dealt with by the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, which has been on the scene since Tuesday.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "An Army EOD team from Colchester Troop attended St Peters Chapel, Southminster, Essex at the request of Dover Coastguard. An item is in the process of being made safe."
