Maldon district residents have been urged to help fix up a 128-year-old Thames sailing barge, so it can sail in the summer season.

Volunteers are needed to help with painting, varnishing, and other maintenance on the Sailing Barge Kitty, one of the oldest spritsail barges still in commission.

Supporters have asked for volunteers to help get Kitty "back up and running again". No prior experience is needed, and all volunteers will be provided with tea, coffee, and biscuits.

Work begins on Friday 14 April, and crews plan work on Kitty every Monday and Friday onwards - weather permitting.

The Victorian vessel is based at North Fambridge, although it was previously moored at Maldon's Hythe Quay.

With help from the community, the crew hopes to start taking passengers on trips during the summer.
