Maldon Film Club opened its doors again on Tuesday 7 September and welcomed in the new season with the screening of the highly-acclaimed, award-winning film The White Crow directed by Ralph Fiennes

This was followed by the Oscar-nominated and award-winning A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood on Tuesday 21 September.

The season continues on 5 and 19 October, when the films to be shown are the Oscar-nominated For Sama and Bait, a winner of one BAFTA award.

For Sama is the story of a 26-year-old female filmmaker who filmed her life in rebel-held Aleppo over a period of five years. It is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama.

Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as she wrestles with an impossible choice.

Our second film for October, Bait, tells the story of Martin Ward - a fisherman without a boat after his brother repurposed their father's vessel as a tourist tripper, thus driving a wedge between the two brothers.

With their childhood home now a getaway for London money, Martin is displaced to the estate above the picturesque harbour.

As his struggle to restore the family to their traditional place creates increasing friction with tourists and locals alike, a tragedy at the heart of the family changes his world.

The films to be screened next month are The Truth and the Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi.

The programme for the 2021/22 season, which covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world, continues until 25 May 2022.

Films will be shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2021 and Wednesdays in 2022.

The club works on a membership basis and is run by a committee that screens an annual programme of 18 films from the best of recent English and foreign language releases, plus one "classic" or members' favourite.

The price of an annual subscription is just £25, which entitles members to free admission to all of the season's films - that is less than £1.32 per film.

In addition, there are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16-18 in full-time education and training at the reduced cost of £18.

As a member, you will be asked to give your reaction to the films you have seen and also help the committee compile the programme for the following season.

Membership is open to all and new members will be made very welcome.

For further details and an application form, please check out the group's website using the link here, visit the Maldon Visitor Information Centre or contact me, John Salisbury, on 07905971608.

Please note that special arrangements have been put in place to ensure that everyone who attends is able to watch this season's films in a safe and secure environment.

So why not join now and enjoy the remaining 17 films for free!
