Maldon Film Club's 18th season will begin on Tuesday 6 September, offering members a 12.5% discount at Maldon Books for novels which were adapted to the films shown.

To take advantage of the offer, Maldon Film Club members must visit Maldon Books in person and show their current membership card.

Currently, this offer applies to the films/books listed below:

  • Ammonite – The Fossil Woman (by Tom Sharpe)
  • Nomadland – Nomadland (by Jessica Bruder)
  • Minari – My Antonio (by Willa Cather)
  • Drive My Car – Men without Women (by Haruki Murakami)

Members will be informed when any new titles become available.

Olivia Rosenthall, owner of Maldon Books, told Nub News: "It's such a great combination – and its such a nice thing for the community to have a film club, especially as we don't have a cinema."

The Film Club meets at Maldon Town Hall. An annual subscription costs £25, providing members free admission to the season's 19 films. There are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16-18 in full time education and training at the reduced cost of £18.

This morning (August 7) Maldon Books opened a 'book hut' in Promenade Park, Maldon.

Olivia says it will be open every day throughout August, "as long as it's not raining cats and dogs outside".

There has been a "shift in focus this year", as Olivia aims to provide more affordable books alongside new and best-selling titles.

She said: "It's been quite a difficult couple of years for people, especially financially over the last few months. We've always been so appreciative of the support we've had from our local community since we've opened.

"I feel they've seen us through a very difficult time for a business to open, during a pandemic.

"It's very hard for independent book shops to offer the kind of discounts that you see online or in Tesco or WHSmith. But where we can, we would absolutely love to be able to offer books at a reduced price for people.

"Because everyone should be able to have a book."

The Book Hut will be open from 10am until 4.30pm on Monday to Saturday, and from 11am until 4pm on Sundays.

Maldon Film Club's 2022/23 season continues until 24 May 2023, with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2022 and Wednesdays in 2023. For general enquiries, contact John Salisbury on 07905 971608

For further details and to apply, visit Maldon Film Club's website or call 01621 869340 for membership enquiries.

Membership forms for the 2022/23 season are available online, by post from the Membership Secretary or by visiting the Maldon Visitor Information Centre, open from 11am until 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
