Residents are invited to join a service to pay tribute to Merchant Navy personnel, taking place at Maldon's Hythe Quay tomorrow afternoon (September 3).

The ceremony will begin at 2pm with a procession of local dignitaries joined by the Maldon Sea Cadets. Shanty Singers will sing an original composition called 'The Red Duster Flag' during the procession. They will sing the Sailor's Farewell while the Town Mayor lays a Merchant Navy wreath on behalf of the people of Maldon.

Local Merchant Navy veteran Eric Dyer will read the Kohima and The Red Ensign flag will be raised in memoriam. Music will also be provided by a Legacy Brass quintet, Piper Jo, and St Mary's Church Choir.

Merchant Navy Day is observed annually on September 3. Every year since 2017, with the exception of 2020, residents have gathered in remembrance of the brave men and women who kept this 'Island Nation' afloat during both World Wars and beyond.

Maldon is said to be an appropriate place to mark the date, as it is a maritime town. Its gateway to the sea, the River Blackwater, is a major feature of its maritime history.

A full order of service is available to view on the Maldon Town Council website.
