On the evening of Monday, 30 March renowned members of Maldon's community gathered in anticipation of finding out which individuals and groups' invaluable contributions to the town were to be recognised and celebrated at the Maldon Town Community Awards.

This year, the Community Awards were sponsored by local business, Maldon® Salt Ltd.

This year's awards attracted close to 40 worthy nominations, highlighting the numerous individuals and groups within Maldon whose acts of kindness, resilience in the face of adversity, and inspiring community initiatives have made a significant impact.

The difficult task of selecting the winners fell to a panel made up of the Town Mayor, Deputy Town Mayor, Chairs of Committees and representatives from Maldon® Salt Ltd, who carefully reviewed each nomination to identify outstanding ambassadors for the town. Following much deliberation by the panel, the following winners in ten categories were chosen:

Art, Culture & Heritage Award – Howard Monks (Novel Sounds)

This winner's contribution has enriched Maldon's cultural life. Since opening an independent record shop in 2024, Howard has revitalised the High Street, creating a welcoming hub for music lovers. Visitors come to rediscover and share music, while his vinyl club fosters friendship and community. His Record Store Day events and fairs draw regional crowds, promoting the town.

Appealing to all generations, his passion and service have built an inclusive space. In a short time, he has made a lasting impact, supporting local culture and keeping Maldon vibrant, creative, and connected.

Citizen of the Year – John and Diana Rogers

This is an extraordinary couple whose lifelong volunteering has deeply impacted the Maldon community. Diana has supported the Little Ship Club and Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) for decades, organising popular Soup Lunches and events that raised significant funds, even continuing after a Parkinson's diagnosis.

John, Diana's husband, a former biology teacher, has also devoted years to service through RNLI work, sailing events, mentoring, and local heritage projects, while entertaining others with music. Together, they have raised hundreds of thousands for charity, inspired generations, and brought people together, making Maldon a better place.

Best Business Contribution – Datum Attitude Brewery

This winner is a local business and recognised for its exceptional contribution to the Maldon community. It provides a welcoming space that unites people while supporting local traders through free pop-up opportunities. Its dedication to veterans is outstanding, offering a safe environment, practical help, and charitable fundraising.

The business also supports families with inclusive activities and initiatives like Christmas gift giving. Attracting visitors from far and wide, it strengthens the local economy and truly serves as a vibrant community hub.

Educator of the Year – Plume College Support Staff

This team has supported over a thousand students in recent years as they progressed through the College. Year after year, departing students praise their incredible impact—whether helping them manage mental health challenges, guiding university applications, or simply offering a listening ear. They are a vital part of the college community and a key factor in its recent examination success. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment have made a lasting difference, not only within the College but also across the wider Maldon community.

Carer of the Year – Jake Edge

Jake has demonstrated exceptional resilience, compassion, and dedication from a young age.

From the age of 13, he acted as a carer for his mother, supporting her daily needs and medical care. During her serious illness and 18-month rehabilitation, he moved to Enfield yet travelled daily to Maldon for school, maintaining strong attendance and performance. Despite these challenges, he continued football with his grandparents' support, preserving normality. His quiet strength, humility, and perseverance are truly inspiring, reflecting remarkable commitment to both his family and education.

Sporting Volunteer Award – James Degiorgio

James achieved the Sporting Volunteer Award in recognition of his exceptional dedication and impact on sport and wellbeing in Maldon. He gives countless hours as a volunteer coach and referee at Maldon Rugby Club, earning respect for his fairness and encouragement. He also supports local schools by refereeing matches and inspiring young people.

A role model who promotes inclusion and resilience, James raises funds to improve community facilities. His tireless commitment has made a lasting, meaningful difference across Maldon.

Young Achiever of the Year – Lilian Gough

Lilian is an exceptional 11-year-old whose dedication, passion, and maturity set her apart. Both on and off the football pitch, she shows unwavering commitment to improving her skills and understanding of the game. She supports her teammates with encouragement, positivity, and leadership beyond her years, always playing with heart, resilience, fairness, and respect.

Balancing school and sport, she approaches every challenge with enthusiasm and a desire to grow. The only girl selected for her district team, she represents Mid Essex with pride, embodying perseverance, kindness, and a true love of football.

Long Service Volunteer Award – Tony Price

Tony has devoted over 20 years to Scouting, becoming group leader in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. He supported all sections as they moved online while overseeing a full refurbishment of the Scout hall. Since then, he has continued to improve facilities, manage outdoor spaces, and secure vital funding. Despite increasing behind-the-scenes demands, he leads with dedication and resilience. Supporting every age group, he has helped shape the experiences of hundreds of young people. Much of his work goes unseen, but his impact is lasting, and his service truly outstanding.

Community Impact Award – Maldon Prom Parkrun

Parkrun is a fantastic regular community activity that makes a meaningful difference to people's lives. It offers a safe, supportive environment for anyone aged four and above to walk, jog, or run5k, helping individuals start or continue their fitness journeys. Beyond the event, it brings volunteers together in a warm, welcoming space, fostering friendships and a strong sense of belonging, while supporting Duke of Edinburgh students. Its impact across Maldon is significant, boosting community spirit, attracting visitors, and improving both physical and mental wellbeing.

Town Mayor's Award for Community Service – Dorreen Linton

For years, Dorreen Linton has tirelessly preserved Maldon's heritage, strengthened community pride, enriched shared spaces, and inspired others through dedication, passion, leadership, and a lasting commitment to cultural stewardship. Her efforts have connected generations, protected traditions, and ensured local stories remain vibrant and accessible to all. Through events, advocacy, and collaboration, she has fostered unity and belonging, encouraging residents to value their history. Her unwavering service reflects integrity, resilience, and vision, leaving a meaningful legacy that will guide future custodians of Maldon's cultural identity with pride and enduring purpose.

Maldon Town Mayor, Cllr John Driver said: "Maldon Town Council warmly congratulates all those connected with the 2026 Community Awards – from the thoughtful nominators, to the deserving nominees, and the inspiring winners. We deeply appreciate their unwavering commitment to our community. The Community Awards provide a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and recognise the significant contributions they all make. We also extend our special thanks to our sponsor, Maldon® Salt Ltd, a leading local business, for partnering with the Town Council to support this year's awards.

Operations Director Mark Picconi from Maldon® Salt Ltd added: "As a business that has been proudly rooted in Maldon for almost 145 years, our local community means a great deal to us. We were honoured to sponsor this year's event and celebrate the incredible individuals and businesses who make such a positive contribution and help our community to thrive."
