Thursday 14 September
'Going Beyond the Seawall: Challenges of filming the Essex Serpent', at The Blue Boar, Maldon, from 7pm
The 'Challenges of Filming The Essex Serpent' in Maldon is one of several evening talks on offer as part of the Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival this week.
TV location manager Harriet Lawrence and Jonjo Stickland, owner of underwater filming specialist company Marine Dept, will discuss the appeal of the Essex Saltmarshes for filmmakers.
The filming of The Essex Serpent, based on Sarah Perry's award-winning novel, created a lot of excitement throughout the Maldon District in March 2020. Several settings in Maldon town, the Promenade, North Fambridge and Tollesbury were used - and film sets, crews and actors became quite a commonplace sight for a while.
At The Blue Boar this Thursday (September 14) from 7pm, the filmmakers will recount the challenges of shooting the series between the tides.
Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival (until Sunday 17 September)
A free walking festival exploring the Maldon District's Saltmarsh Coast and surrounding history, culture, and wildlife is set to run from 8 until 17 September.
Organised by the Maldon District Tourism Group, The Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival is a 10-day festival in Maldon and the Dengie Peninsula, designed to help visitors and locals enjoy the Maldon District's rich tapestry of history and heritage along its 75 miles of coastline.

The Maeldune Heritage Centre, Maldon, 11am until 4pm (until Saturday 16 September)
Home to the Maldon Embroidery, which tells of the epic Battle of Maldon, the Maeldune Heritage Centre will be open for talks during the Heritage Open Days.
The Maldon Society's extensive collection of photographic and video archives will also be showing on a continuous display, along with displays from the Maldon Museum and the Burnham-on-Crouch Museum. The Art Gallery will show an exhibition of local work called Creativity Unwrapped.
Saturday 16 September
Maldon Regatta, Hythe Quay, from 10am
The annual Maldon Town Regatta will return to Hythe Quay this Saturday (September 16) from 10am.
This year's event will see the racing begin at 8am. Smacks and old gaffers, traditional and modern yachts will race upriver from West Mersea to Osea Island. From there, a second race will lead the vessels to the town, berthing at high water.
A variety of stalls will be open from 8am on the quay, with entertainment on offer throughout the day. Plume Academy students will provide music from 10.30am.
At noon, a traditional Punch and Judy show will entertain children. Local shanty crew Salt, Water and Beer will perform at 12.45pm.
The Parade of Sail will take place at 1pm, followed by a rubber duck race at 1.30pm. A local Morris side will dance on Hythe Quay at 2pm.
Another Punch and Judy show will close the day's entertainment, before the prizegiving at 4pm.
Steam Tug Brent Children's Activity Day, from 10.30am
Children can enjoy activities on Hythe Quay and aboard the historic Steam Tug Brent.
They will be given a tour of the Brent, along with puzzles and games about the iconic vessel.
Built for the Admiralty in 1945, Brent was launched too late for the War effort and was sold on instead to the Port of London Authority, working on the Thames and in the docks.

The Plume Lecture 2023 at Maldon Town Hall, from 6.30pm
Oxford University's Professor Adam Smyth will lead this year's Annual Plume Lecture at Maldon Town Hall on September 16.
The talk, entitled 'Material texts in early modern England: the case of waste paper', will begin at 7pm with doors opening from 6.30pm
All are welcome. Free entry (donations appreciated).
Quiz Night at West Maldon Community Centre, from 8pm
Put your knowledge to the test at the first West Maldon Community Centre quiz night since May, this Saturday (September 16) from 8pm.
The quiz will be held in the Sports Hall at the Community Centre. Teams of up to eight people are allowed.
Entry costs £5 per adult, while under 16's enter for free. There will be a prize for the winning team.
A raffle will also be held, costing £1 per ticket.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own drinks and nibbles.
Quizmaster will be Kevin Briggs.
Sunday 17 September
Farleigh Hospice's Cycle for Life, Chelmsford, from 8am
Farleigh's Hospice's annual cycle ride is returning for its 25th event, starting in Chelmsford this Sunday (September 17) at 8am.
Cycle for Life is a popular event as it appeals to cyclists of all ages and abilities, from beginners and families enjoying a fun ride through the beautiful Essex countryside to experienced cyclists looking for a greater challenge.
There is a choice of three routes - 20, 50 or 100 kilometres – all starting and finishing at Farleigh Hospice.
- 20km - The shortest distance is a family-friendly route that is ideal for the beginner or younger cyclist.
- 50km – This route is a relaxed cycle ride through all eight of the beautiful Essex Rodings and would suit regular cyclists looking for a tougher distance.
- 100km - The longest 100km course is more challenging, going through the Rodings, the picturesque villages of Thaxted and Finchingfield, and then follows 35km of the 2014 Tour de France route. It is ideal for very experienced/professional cyclists. No under 18s.
Early registration closes today (September 14), although you can register on the day.
Burnham Alternative Market at Burnham Village Hall, from 9.30am
Formerly known as Burnham Farmers & Artisan Market, you will find a variety of food and produce stalls at the market, along with a wider range of crafts and locally made artisan products.
Weather is not a factor as most stalls are inside the carnival hall with the plants and sellers using chilled storage vehicles in the car park. Entrance is free to customers. Parking is at the rear of the hall or on street.
Beeleigh Water and Steam Mill guided tours, 11am until 4pm
Beeleigh Water and Steam Flour Mill contains a unique Elephant Boiler, Wentworth Beam Engine and Victorian Milling Hurst.
Beeleigh Water and Steam Mill were once one of the largest flour mills in Essex. The site was abandoned after the watermill was destroyed by fire in 1875 although the steam mill survived largely intact, but not operational. The steam mill contains a unique Elephant Boiler, Wentworth Beam Engine and Victorian Milling Hurst. Members of the Beeleigh Mill Restoration Group, who are currently undertaking major restoration work to the engine, will be providing guided tours of the Steam Mill and will explain the history of the Mill and the machinery it contains.
Six Years Walking the UK Coastline: Talk by Chris Lewis, at Plume Academy, Maldon, from 7pm
Ex-paratrooper Chris Lewis completed a 19,000-mile UK coastline walk, raising £500,000 for charity.
On Sunday, he will discuss his experience at Upper Plume School Hall, Fambridge Road, from 7pm.
