The Maldon Carnival Committee is urging new volunteers to take part, to help keep the event going after it was cancelled this year.

Next month, the committee will hold its Annual General Meeting. This will be the first meeting since it was announced this year's carnival had been cancelled "due to a lack of funding and volunteers".

The committee will meet on Thursday 7 September at Plantation Hall in Heybridge, at 7.30pm.

Last year, Maldon Rugby Club donned horns and plastic swords, harking back to Maldon's viking history. A particular highlight was the handmade shields, which helped to earn them an award for 'Second Most Creative Float'. (Photo: Ben Shahrabi)

Christine Thomas, who joined the committee and successfully brought the carnival back last year is pleading to "anyone who wants to see the carnival continue".

"Please come along to our meeting and see if you can do anything to help us," she said.

The Carnival Committee says it cannot continue with the handful of volunteers who are currently on board.

Christine told Nub News: "We really need the community to step up and help save the carnival. Even if there are only one or two events you can help at, we really need you!

"From pouring teas and coffees, organising an event, admin duties or simply helping to set up and clear away, there is a role for everyone.

"Many hands make light work and we need all the help we can get. You can do one hour or five hours as a volunteer - it is up to you. Even if you just come to the meeting to hear what we have to say it is a start - there is no pressure to commit."

Maldon Carnival started in 1895 and is believed to be one of the longest-running carnivals to date. The committee raises thousands of pounds by organising various events throughout the year, so a free and traditional carnival parade can be enjoyed by the local community.

Last year, the carnival attracted crowds from across the District, raising £2,560 for local schools and the Mayor's chosen charities.

To show an interest in helping out with next year's Maldon Carnival, attend the meeting at Heybridge Plantation Hall on September 7 from 7.30pm. Those who are not able to attend but would like more information should call Christine on 07724 371 775.
