Established in 1989, with five regional depots in the UK, Our client is a respected plant-hire supplier to a variety of industry sectors such as construction, rail & events. To complement their traditional range of lighting and compaction equipment, they are also at the leading edge of the development of off-grid power solutions including power and charging solutions for battery powered equipment as well as the latest in hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

They currently have an excellent opportunity for an Operations Manager at their Depot in Maldon.

The successful person will be the qualified and responsible Operators License holder for Quayside, managing the undertakings our vehicle fleet ranging from 3.5t to 18t for delivery plus ancillary vehicles for use in the depot.

Responsible person for ensuring the in-house fleet remains fit for purpose, operationally safe, road worthy and legal, by monitoring and reviewing transport compliance on a day-to-day basis, address shortcomings and ensure standards adhere to changing legislation.

To manage the operational depot, ensuring safe systems of work are in place and adhered to, and the depot is a tidy and clean operating center. Ensuring the depot is managed in accordance with general environmental and health and safety requirements.

To be a key decision maker within the Operational Management Team.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Transport Management

  • Be the primary Transport Manager/CPC holder on the company s Operator s licence.
  • Ensure that fleet is fully maintained according to statutory regulations and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure all transport operations are carried out in a compliant manner, this includes the Goods vehicle Operators Licence requirements and the update of internal databases as appropriate, as well as driver s hours legislation.
  • Ensure that Drivers adhere to road traffic regulations via vehicle telematic management.
  • To be the strategic lead for continued development and improvement of driver and vehicle standards.
  • Ensure all vehicles are maintained and fit for purpose, including managing the Maintenance Contract covering servicing, MOT and repairs. You will be responsible for organising service schedules to ensure compliance and operational requirements are equally balanced.
  • Ensure vehicle defects are reported, actioned and recorded daily.
  • To be the senior lead for vehicle safety to ensure staff and members of the public remain safe at all times. This includes management of LOLER inspections and records (for vehicles).
  • Ensure all relevant compliance administration is retained in accordance with legal retention periods. This will involve ensuring processes are implemented and streamlined as and when required.
  • Responsible for being the main contact with external governing bodies such as the DVSA and Traffic Commissioner.
  • Be the responsible Contract Manager to a wide range of contracts including vehicle maintenance & telematics.
  • The lead for governing body audits and inspections for vehicles in addition to any internal audit requirements.
  • Be the lead advisor for fleet management and compliance, ensuring that you maintain strong external networks that ensure best practice is implemented.
  • Responsible for arranging and managing a regular programme of mandatory external CPC training for all relevant Drivers to ensure TCP pool of drivers remain CPC compliant (inc. ADR, FORS etc).

Depot Management:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations within the Depot, overseeing site adherence to key site processes relating to health and safety, security, employee relations and legislation.
  • Depot waste management.
  • Contribute to the development of procedures, policies and safe systems of work for Depot operations, and ensuring these are trained and adhered to in conjunction with the QHSE team.
  • Undertaking monitoring and checks in accordance with procedures and ensuring records are maintained.
  • Managing Quayside depot employees to ensure all daily tasks are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Overseeing the quality control of the depot and all equipment within the depot.
  • Managing cover for Holidays and Sickness when required.
  • Serve as the central point to ensure daily operational requirements and service levels are met.
  • To directly manage depot employees under the guidance of the Directors or PracticalHR.
  • To handle performance issues firmly but fairly in line with the current company disciplinary policy.
  • Lead with enthusiasm and build great team cohesion.
  • Ensure compliance with the company Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • To ensure that team members are correctly trained and developed so that they are able to undertake the duties expected of them.
  • Manage the hire desk, including supporting transport planning.
