The Jammers knew a tough game was in-store in this FA Cup second preliminary round.
Their opponents were Hornchurch FC, a team flying high in The Isthmian Premier League, a full tier above Maldon.
Prior to kick off, a minute's silence was impeccably observed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
The game started slowly until, at the sixth minute, Sam Higgins chipped Maldon keeper Tom Middlehurst from a good 40 yards. An audacious bit of skill to put Hornchurch one-up.
Lightning struck again when, on 10 minutes, Higgins repeated the technique and again caught Middlehurst off his line. This time his lob was from 35 yards and put Hornchurch 2-0 up.
With the gulf in their league positions, the home supporters feared the worst.
The game then settled down, with neither team creating too much in the way of chances. Harvey Sayer had a good run, followed by a right foot shot. Higgins put a ball across the Maldon penalty area, but Charlie Stimson finished weakly.
Half time came, with Hornchurch 2-0 up.
Maldon started the second half in a positive frame and a mazey dribble from Sayer was cut down when he was cynically brought down from behind. Rickie Hayles was deservedly cautioned.
Middlehurst made a couple of smart saves in a few sporadic Hornchurch attacks. One of these was a full stretch save from a piledriver shot from Liam Nash.
Maldon continued the half to give as good as they got and, from a Sayer cross, Brad Ihionvien headed narrowly over the bar.
With 15 minutes left, Laste Dombaxe was sent off for Maldon after he received a second yellow card. His second caution was awarded by the referee for a deliberate hand ball.
This handed the initiative to Hornchurch and in one of their forays forward from this point, a cross found an unmarked Liam Nash in the Maldon penalty area. He netted coolly into the corner of the net.
The game ended 3-0 to Hornchurch. There were positive signs for Maldon, but their lack of goals is currently costing them.
Congratulations are in order for Hornchurch, as they move on to Monday's FA Cup draw.
Maldon & Tiptree are next in action this Tuesday (September 20) at 7.45pm, when they are set to take on Hashtag United.
