Making a date for 2024 with Limebrook u3a
Limebrook u3a had a very successful 2023 and we have meetings and trips organised for our members for an exciting New Year.
Graham Churchill is the Interest Group co-ordinator for Photography at Limebrook u3a.
The creation of a Calendar is a project that he has run for several years. The subject is decided early in the year and for 2024 it was "The Four Seasons".
All members are invited to submit up to three photographs for consideration for inclusion in the next year's Calendar. When all the submissions are gathered in, they are sent to Phil Watkins, a Member of the Maldon Camera Club, who acts as an independent judge, who selects the final twelve.
Once sorted into the appropriate months they are sent to an online printer for printing. The finished Calendar is then made available to all members of the Limebrook u3a. The idea behind this is to encourage members of the group to use their skills with the camera to try and get one of their photographs included.
Chris Stringer coordinates two Family History Groups and says "What a wonderful time we had with Jill Gooding leading the meeting on the theme of family photographs and family history. She started explaining about the u3a National Project with the University of Leeds and the research which she had been taking part in. Jill gave us some background and explained briefly the history of photographs.
"Then we looked at some family photos and discussed what information they give us to help with our family history research. Jill's apprehension that no one would bring any photos of their own were totally unfounded and there was plenty to look at and discuss. The themes were: - a photograph that helps you remember - a photograph with an intriguing caption - a photograph that relates to a mystery or secret. The conclusion was that photographs are really fascinating, and we should look closer at them. "
Jo Madge arranged the Walking Group's outing. "We enjoyed a late autumnal day for our November walk which began at Daisy Meadows car park, Heybridge Basin. Refreshments were enjoyed enroute at The Beach House Café, Mill Beach. The food was good but the view across the Blackwater with the sun sparkling on the incoming tide was spectacular!"
Joan Hutchings reports "Our Rummikub Group is continuing to flourish. The numbers have increased steadily. We now have 12 members who attend regularly and enjoy a pleasant afternoon each month. We play a couple of games then stop for a tea break and chat before playing 2 or 3 more games after mixing the groups."
One of our newest groups is focusing on Nature. Barbara Hallett says "We now have 10 members, some of whom have been on three Nature walks and we are looking forward to the New Year."
