Maldon Drama Group and Maldon Orchestra will bring "the joys and sorrows" of life in London's East end to the stage at Plume Academy this month.

Musical drama 'Cable Street Blues'  will be performed at Plume Academy's main hall on October 20 and 21. The play was written by Maldon Drama Group's Neil Fisher, who received a community award for his 2018 play 'Hope Flowers' which commemorated the First World War and raised funds for the British Legion.

It is a musical drama about the joys and sorrows of life in London's East End, lived during extraordinary times; the roaring twenties; the jazz age; the Great Depression and a slowly gathering storm which will finally break, in the Battle of Cable Street.

In collaboration with Maldon Orchestra, the show will feature live music from the period. Music will include Careless Love, The Charleston, St. James Infirmary, Brother Can You Spare A Dime, Sing, Sing, Sing and more.

A Maldon Drama Group spokesperson says the play "describes the story of ordinary lives lived in extraordinary times: the roaring twenties, the jazz age, the great depression and a slowly gathering storm, which will finally break in the battle of Cable Street".

The production is in support of the David Randall Foundation. A local charity, it provides 'Good Days' for people in Essex with terminal and life limiting illnesses, and scholarships to help young musicians and sports people achieve their goals.

Maldon Drama Group notes the story features occasional references to suicide.
